How It Works

Our slopes are made in Holland by Maxxtracks who have been manufacturing and operating such slopes for over 15 years. The surface is made up of a revolving astro turf carpet which is approximately 2cm thick which we keep constantly watered to make it suitable for skiing or snowboarding. The carpet, unlike snow, is not pliable and so demands a greater accuracy of technique. Therefore you'll find your sessions at Skiplex make you a better skier or boarder.

The Slopes

Chiswick

Our ski slopes are made in Holland by Maxxtracks who have been manufacturing and operating these slopes for over 15 years. They make two sizes of slope: The smaller slope as used at our Chiswick centre is 7.5 metres long and 5.0 metres wide. On this size, we can accommodate 2 skiers or snowboarders at the same time.

Reading / Basingstoke

The larger slope as used in both our Reading and Basingstoke centres are 9.50 metres long and 5.00 metres wide. On these slopes, we can accommodate 3 skiers or 2 snowboarders at the same time.

The Carpet

The Carpet

The carpet which comprises the slope is an astro turf carpet manufactured for Maxxtracks. It is approximately 2cm thick and when applied with water is a suitable service for skiing or snowboarding on. The carpet is not as pliable as natural snow and so demands a high level of technical ability to use it at an advanced level. It also requires an active form of skiing whereby the skier has to be more dynamic in the turn than might be required on a normal snow piste.

Slope Angle

Slope Angle

As the skier or snowboarder uses the slope, the carpet is angled from the back so that there is a natural downward movement. However, this is compensated by the upward movement of the carpet which rotates around two rollers, one at the top and one at the bottom of the slope. The slope angle can be changed by the instructor from 2-20 degrees.

Speed of Rotation

Speed of Rotation

The speed of rotation of the carpet can also be adjusted by the instructor from 0 - 20 mph. With these two adjustable variables, the slopes can accommodate an absolute beginner to a World Cup skier. At the bottom of the slope, is a metal bar which can be used by beginners to gain their balance, learn the initial techniques of snowplough.

Equipment

Equipment

Boots: the better the fit, the better the control over the skis. The skis we use are the same as any standard carving ski but due to the resistance the carpet creates, we do blunt the edges. We adjust our skis so that they release more quickly than on snow therefore you shouldn't bring your own skis.
